I never knew that was her on the Schoolhouse Rock songs. She was hip alright.

Aw, shit. Miles Davis said she was the only white woman who ever had soul. Maybe a little hyperbolic, but it demonstrates how hard it is to unpack enough adjectives for someone who was, after all, sui generis.
