Fugly woman

sexworkerviolet.jpg Gina spotted this photo alongside a story about San Francisco's attempt to decriminalize prostitution. The caption reads, "A sex worker who goes by the name Violet poses for a picture at a bus stop."

Phone sex worker, maybe. Because if hookers in San Francisco really wear fat-girl jackets, pleated striped shirts, polka-dot knee socks and big-ass granny shoes, it should be a crime.

in hamburg, germany, the prostitutes all wore big puffy jackets, tight ski pants, and tennis shoes. it's cold and wet there, and if you have to stand on the street, you need to be dressed appropriately.

Not all women whose job it is to excite older men have $750,000 clothing budgets

"Sex worker" is a catch-all term; she could be a dancer. Whichever, she's definitely not a streetwalker. That's why the caption reads "posed." She probably advertises on craigslist.

Very odd how they chose to illustrate the story with two white, healthy-looking women. Not really a large part of the demographic.

PS Would you be making fun of her outfit if she were a crack-addicted street prostitute?

Dear Mr. Blackwell,
I'm guessing she's off-duty, and judging from the location probably just left one of our many fine Market St. exotic dancing establishments. SF cracked down on street prostitution during the Jordan and Brown administrations, so the days of halter tops and gold lamé hot pants are long gone outside of drag bars.

Dear Hater - It ain't the meat, it's the motion.

A sex worker who goes by the name Violet poses for a picture at a bus stop.

This it the type of cap you get when you have an anal retentive editor who demands that everything visiable in the photo be expained: Her "goes by" name, where the pic was shot and of course the fact that a women standing doing nothing is somehow posing (for "a picture," no less.)

I'm surprised the cap does not conclude with: ...as an indentified man who appears to have no involvement with the women, walks by.

@al. I truncated. The full cap is:

sex worker who goes by the name "Violet," poses for a picture at a bus stop as a bystander waits for a bus in downtown San Francisco, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008.

I meant "unidentified man" of course.

(This is why I NEED an anal editor)

You probably don't associate this outfit with sex work, since it's the sort of thing you see me wear every day. Love, your upstairs neighbor.

Maybe she's on her way to a costume party dressed as the '90s.

"A sex worker who goes by the name Violet poses for a picture at a bus stop, while, in the foreground, a young single woman wonders why she ever thought she'd find a husband in San Francisco."

I'd hit it.

Wait, this isn't fark.com. Sorry.

Daniel, stop trying to reduce my choices as a potential sex worker client. This is the free market.

Umm. There is an a-s out there for every seat.

I know identical twin men, very good-looking, very successful, who when looking for prostitutes seek out the "Esther Rolle"-type of black woman. They are not looking for Halle Berry, they are looking for Halle's 280-lb. aunt.

Man you are lame. I can't believe you're writing for gawker, and I don't even think gawker is so great. Fugly? Really? Is it 2002? This is really the most interesting thing you could come up with?

Please to explain "fat girl jacket"?

The Economist picked up the photo; no caption.
