Funniest movie you'll see this year
In last week's Times' coverage of Sundance, Virginia Heffernan Manohla Dargis made a snide comment about an allegedly overhyped comedy that, from her description, may have been The Ten, an ensemble sketch film that sold on Friday for $4.5 mil.
If that was the film she was talking about, Heffernan Dargis has her head up her ass. I saw a rough cut a few months ago (a friend of mine is the editor) and laughed as hard as I later would at Borat. ThinkFilm's prexy calls it a ""a very smart brand of seemingly dumb comedy". That's pretty accurate, though I'd have said that it's smart comedy about dumb comedy a Zucker-Abrams-Zucker movie for the irony generation. Watch for it in August.

Any critic reviewing this film has to first divulge what they thought of Wet Hot American Summer.

I thought WHAS was a pleasant diversion with many funny parts and some lame ones. This has a similar "let's put on a show" vibe, but it's a whole other order of funny. Also, leans more heavily on pop culture satire.
Why, what did YOU think of it?

Revolutionary, subtle, a movie unabashedly full of jokes and references only a tiny portion of the audience would get. One of the best comedies ever made.

In that case, brace yourself hard for The Ten. I should say that I would not be at all surprised if it bombs in the theaters because the jokes will be way too obscure for the masses (both in terms of references and sensibility) but it ought to find a huge following on DVD.

I second that. Except for "one" it was more like three or four of the best comedies ever made.

1. I second the emotion about WHAS being one of the best comedies ever. Perhaps funniest movie ever.
2. I saw Lennon/Garant/Kenney at a Q&A for Reno 911!: Miami, and they mentioned that The Ten was born out of an attempt to write a movie in 24 hours. The advised wannabe filmmakers to skip trying to sell their script and just grab a camera and some friends and make it yourself, using that as an example. Though they failed to mention that it probably helps if you're David Wain and your friends are Paul Rudd and Winona Ryder.

Yes, but more importantly, The State.
